Event Details
The Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will highlight the centennial of one of the region’s historic landmarks with the opening of “New Mount Olive Baptist Church 1918-2018: Celebrating 100 Years of Worshipping God, Serving Humanity and Embracing our Community” exhibit on Saturday, August 11, at 2 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display through Friday, September 28, at The New River Inn on the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society Campus (231 SW Second Avenue).
In honor of New Mount Olive Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale’s 100th Anniversary on November 25, this exhibit will pay reverence to the church’s tradition of community service and document its path to becoming one of the most influential and dynamic religious institutions in the Fort Lauderdale community. Visitors will be greeted by video messages from the last three pastors of the church - Rev. George E. Weaver, Dr. Mack King Carter and Dr. Marcus D. Davidson - who have led the church for over 55 years accompanied by music which has been essential to the church. Archival photographs, including of three of the eight founding members of the church from 1918, and the histories of New Mount Olive’s influential leaders, theologians and valiant agents of change (past and present) who attracted and unified congregants will also be featured. These individuals worked to revitalize low and moderate-income communities by providing strategic programs that promoted economic development, created jobs and focused on strengthening families through public service, affordable housing, and entrepreneurial ventures.
The exhibit is curated by the New Mount Olive Baptist Church Anniversary and History Committee under the leadership of Tony Thompson.
